April 30, 2014—Tesla Motors is close to naming at least two U.S. states for a planned battery “gigafactory,” according to a report from Bloomberg News.
The auto manufacturer said it will break ground at each location to ensure lithium ion packs will be ready for supply within three years.
Tesla said it wants to boost global production of its Model S electric car by 56 percent this year and also plans a mass-market vehicle.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that lower-cost battery packs are needed to ensure Tesla’s proposed less expensive model gets to market on time.
According to the report, Tesla in February said it was assessing sites in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas.
