Numbers: The Average Shop in 2022

Taking a closer look at what today’s average repair shop’s look like.

Based on the 2022 Ratchet+Wrench Industry Survey, the most common type of shop is an independent general repair shop in the Midwest that does between $1 million and $2.5 million in annual revenue. The majority of respondents reported shop square footage in the 2,000-4,999 range with a staff of 3-6 employees, including themselves. The shops have 5-6 bays and 3-4 lifts.

  • Under 2,000: 8%
  • 2,000–4,999: 42% 
  • 5,000–9,999: 36%
  • 10,000–14,999: 9%
  • Over 15,000: 5%

  • 1-2: 13%
  • 3-4: 22%
  • 5-6: 22%
  • 7-8: 15%
  • 9-10: 11%
  • 11 or more: 17%
