Autonomous Uber SUV Struck in Ariz.

March 28, 2017—A self-driving Uber SUV was struck by another vehicle making a turn at an intersection in Tempe, Ariz. last Friday. The company is testing autonomous vehicles in the area, and Uber briefly suspended its pilot program for autonomous vehicles in Arizona, as well as Pittsburgh and San Francisco, until the full crash investigation was completed.

Uber returned its self-driving cars to Tempe roadways on Monday, according to an Arizona Republic report.

No one was seriously injured in the weekend accident. Police in Tempe told the Associated Press the self-driving SUV was obeying the law, and the driver of the other vehicle―which was turning left―failed to yield. That motorist was cited for a moving violation as a result.

Uber released a statement on Saturday, noting that there were no passengers in the self-driving Volvo SUV at the time of the accident, though there were two operators in the front. The Uber vehicle rolled over onto its side as a result of the collision.
