May 17, 2022—Three automakers in Detroit have reinstated a mask requirement for employees.
According to Fox Business, General Motors, Ford Motor Co., and Stellantis have brought the requirement back to their facilities due to high levels of COVID-19 in the southeastern Michigan area.
Six counties in Michigan have been listed as experiencing high COVID-19 levels by the Center for Disease Control. As a result, the CDC has recommended individuals wear masks indoors in public settings in those counties.
Both GM and Ford are headquartered in Wayne County, which is one of the counties listed as high risk. The North American headquarters of Stellantis is in Oakland County, which is also on the list. All three of the automakers have factories across southeastern Michigan.
Ford is reinstating a mask requirement in plants located in the high-risk portions of the state. The Stellantis mask requirement for employees, contractors and visitors will be in place for two weeks at their facilities in high-risk counties.
GM will implement COVID-19 protective procedures at its facilities in Oakland, Wayne, Livingston, and Macomb counties due to CDC guidance.
