Poll: 6 in 10 Drivers Prefer Gas-Powered Cars

April 15, 2022

Drives say they want more certainty and selection from EVs before they commit.

April 15, 2022—Hate being stranded on the side of the road? If so, you’re not alone. Six in 10 EV-hesitant drivers say that’s their top reason for not abandoning their gas-powered vehicles, according to research from J.D Power.

Among other things, they want more variety—80% of vehicles sold today are pickups and SUVs—greater range and charging access.

Rob Cochran, who owns Cochran Automotive in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, says his customers are curious about EVs but aren’t urgent regarding a switch to an all-electric vehicle.

Cochran thinks OMEs should lead the way in preparing the industry for the transition. Hearing dates regarding initiatives hasn’t helped shops like his with preparing for years ahead of 2030.

“We have these initiatives by 2030, but [we need] more specific details on what the next two-, three-, four-, five years will look like so we can prepare our market for it. That information I believe is—or should be out there—and the OEMs could help by being more transparent and sharing that information with us,” he said.
