General Motors has data spanning 20 million motorists and almost 50 countries.
Sept. 3, 2020—General Motors has become one of the top ten largest data hoarders in the United States due to the majority of its vehicles being equipped with OnStar capabilities.
OnStar is a subsidiary of GM that controls the vehicle's telemetrics and therefore gathers data. According to GM Authority, it first began collecting data in 1996 when OnStar was first introduced to its vehicles. GM currently has access to the data of more than 20 million drivers spanning 47 countries.
Allen Levenson, head of GM's data and analytics division says the company avoids the "creep" factor because it does not link the driver's name or other personal information to the vehicular data. The next set of data GM is looking to gather deals with electric vehicle usage.
