States Eliminate Road Test for New Drivers

May 12, 2020

Since it's impossible to practice social distancing during a driving test, Georgia and Wisconsin temporarily did away with the road portion of the test to obtain a license.

May 12, 2020—Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order in mid-April that waived the road test part of the licensing process and now about 20,000 teens have obtained their license without the traditional road test, reported CNET.

All other requirements to obtain a license in Georgia are still mandatory, such as 40 hours of supervised driving time and a passing grade for the written portion of the entire process.

If the driver is over 18 and has a learner's permit, it'll be automatically upgraded to a license.

Wisconsin adopted a similar system as of May 11, according to another report. More specifically, the Wisconsin DOT is allowing drivers under the age of. 18, who check off a series of requirements, to have their road test waived so they can get a probationary license.

Wisconsin teens who previously took a test and failed it must wait until the DMVs open—scheduled May 26—to take the formal test.
