Proposed California Bill Aims to Fund EV Conversions

A bill proposed by two California senators would give residents $2,000 toward converting their gas vehicle to an EV.

Feb. 9, 2023–A recent story from KTLA reports that a California bill has been proposed to give residents up to $2,000 in funds towards converting their gas vehicle to an EV, according to Jalopnik.

The bill would “create a rebate program called the Zero-Emission Aftermarket Conversion Project (ZACP)” and would dedicate $2 million annually toward providing drivers with up to $2,000 “to convert their gas and diesel-engined vehicles to zero-emission vehicles.”

California senators Anthony J. Portantino (D-25) and Josh Newman (D-29) introduced the bill. It’s sponsored by SEMA, who has said that the bill would “keep classic cars running and on the road.”

The bill, if passed, would be another leap toward California’s plan of banning gas engines by 2035. Though with EV conversions costing up to $20,000 or more, as pointed out by Jalopnik, it’s questionable if a $2,000 fund will be enough to complete the task.
