EV Battery Costs Result in High Insurance Premiums

A report from Reuters has shown that EVs tend to have higher insurance premiums due to the high cost of repairing battery packs that cause them to be scrapped, according to Green Car Reports.

With batteries sometimes taking up to half of an EV’s price, insurance companies often resort to simply totaling the car instead of having them replaced, even over minor damage.

While the Reuters report found that some automakers have attempted to make their battery packs easier to replace, such as Ford, EV manufacturing giant Tesla has only made their batteries harder to work on.

Ford has worked toward producing making batteries easier to replace, as well as Nissan and Renault, though the latter two have “indicated this could only be done at dealerships or other manufacturer-associated facilities.”

In contrast, Tesla has begun producing Model Y vehicles with batteries integral to the vehicle’s structure, rendering it irreparable. Automaker Stellantis has said that batteries inside of their vehicles involved in crashes where airbags deployed may not have their batteries repaired by the manufacturer.
