Stellantis has announced a global recall of almost 220,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs due to the power liftgates catching on fire, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The recall applies to the 2014 through 2016 model-year Jeep Cherokees as a result of water being able to enter the liftgate control computer. This sets off an electrical short that ignites a fire.
The automaker has urged owners of affected vehicles to park them outdoors and away from other vehicles. It’s also possible for the power liftgates to stop working before a fire occurs.
The problem was first discovered by the automaker during a routine review of customer data. While the number of vehicles that have caught on fire is unavailable, Stellantis has received 50 customer assistance records, 23 warranty claims, and 21 field reports related to the problem, with no reports of injuries.
A remedy has not been announced yet. Owners of affected vehicles will begin receiving letters from Stellantis starting June 30.
