AAA is predicting a 2.4% increase in Americans driving during Independence Day weekend from last year, according to a press release.

An estimated 50.7 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more this year, which is an increase of 2.1 million people from 2019. 

The number of people driving continues to rise each year, with the 43.2 million predicted drivers for this holiday representing a 2.4% increase from 2022 and a 4% increase from 2019. The roads will be busiest on June 30, with INRIX projecting a 30% increase in average travel time on that day. 

With the price of fuel currently ranging from $3.50 to $3.60 a gallon, the cost to travel is less than the July 4, 2022, national average of $4.80 a gallon. 

“We’ve never projected travel numbers this high for Independence Day weekend,” said AAA Travel Senior Vice President Paula Twidale. “What this tells us is that despite inventory being limited and some prices 50% higher, consumers are not cutting back on travel this summer. Many of them heeded our advice and booked early, another sign of strong travel demand.”
