The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is launching an investigation into 346,000 Ford Escape vehicles due to an issue with the door causing it to open while the vehicle is in motion, Reuters reports.

The issue is specifically with a weld in the door assembly that could potentially fail and cause the door to come open while driving. 

The NHTSA has received 118 questionnaires detailing the failure of spot welds in the check arm brackets in the front doors of 2020-21 Ford Escape vehicles. 25 reports of minor injuries related to the issue have been submitted to the NHTSA, as well as one report of minor property damage.

According to owners of affected vehicles, they have experienced their windows not working anymore as well as hearing a popping noise when opening the door as the door check bracket becomes detached. Some owners have had to replace their entire vehicle door and have been quoted $1,800 to $2,500 in repair costs.

Ford is actively collaborating with the NHTSA as it completes its preliminary evaluation before it can decide to issue a recall.
