Toyota to Push Fuel-Cell Vehicles in China and Europe

Toyota will be moving its efforts to promote hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle sales to Europe and China.

Toyota will be moving its efforts to promote hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle sales to Europe and China, according to Green Car Reports.

As originally reported by Reuters, though Toyota was originally slated to focus on North America for the sale of fuel-cell vehicles, the automaker has not been achieving its targets with this approach.

In 2022, a little over 3,900 fuel cell vehicles from Toyota were sold–less than half of 1% of its global sales, which came to around 9.5 million vehicles.

With hydrogen production and demand being higher in European and Chinese markets, it would be easier for the company to achieve its goal of selling 200,000 fuel-cell vehicles by 2030 if it were to move its focus to those regions, according to Toyota Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima.

Toyota will continue its plans of manufacturing hydrogen fuel-cell modules in Kentucky this December and is also working with the U.S. Department of Energy and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the use of fuel-cell tech.
