Over 870k Ford F-150 Pickup Trucks Recalled
Ford is issuing a recall of over 870,000 F-150 pickup trucks in the United States due to an issue with the electric parking brake activating on its own, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The recall applies to F-150s with single exhaust systems from model years 2021 through 2023. According to documents from government safety regulators, the automaker said that the issue stems from a rear wiring bundle that comes in contact with the rear axle housing, chafing the wiring and triggering a short circuit.
In this event, drivers will likely see a parking brake warning light and a warning message appear on the dashboard.
Ford has currently received 918 warranty claims and three field reports of this wire chafing occurring in North America. Of those received, 299 reported unexpected parking brake activation–19 of them happening while the trucks were in motion. Fortunately, no crashes or injuries are currently known to have resulted from the issue.
Owners will be sent letters notifying them of the issue beginning September 11. Dealers will examine the rear wiring harness on recalled vehicles. If the protective tape is damaged, the harness will be replaced. If the tape is not worn, a protective tie strap and tape wrap will be installed as a preventative measure.
