The White House has opted to support the standardization of Tesla’s EV charging plugs to help address the lack of charging infrastructure and promote EV adoption, ABC News reports.
The connector Tesla uses for its charging stations, called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), has rivaled the Combined Charging Standard connector but has gradually dominated in popularity.
Tesla runs the largest network of fast chargers in the U.S., with many Supercharger stations being placed in high-volume areas. After opening parts of its charging network earlier this year, nearly every major automaker globally has implemented Tesla’s NACS connectors for their EVs.
In pace with the direction of the industry, SAE International announced the NACS connectors as its standard for charging stations, linking Tesla EVs to the company’s network. According to the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, this new standard will allow any manufacturer of vehicles or charging equipment to utilize NACS connectors in their products.
As the United States trails behind other countries such as China and Germany in EV adoption, standardizing NACS connectors is a move towards improving the availability of charging stations for EV drivers–the lack of which is increasingly cited as a reason to not transition to EVs for many consumers.
