Malfunctioning door handles has led to a cease in production and recall of Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric vehicle, according to Green Car Reports.
Impacting 2021–2024 models of the ID.4, the recall was issued for 98,806 vehicles due to water being able to enter door handles and make contact with a printed circuit board, leading to the door unlocking on its own.
While Volkswagen estimates that less than 1% of recalled vehicles have this defect, it has not only recalled them but halted the sale of ID.4s, as well as production of the vehicle at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant.
Volkswagen spokesperson Mark Gillies shared that until a remedy for the issue is found, production and sales of the vehicle will not continue. Current owners of affected vehicles are being instructed to visit the dealership for a software update, and if necessary, a new door handle.
Drivers who have paid to resolve the issue themselves are eligible for reimbursement from the automaker. With this recall being an expansion of two previous ones, customers who had repairs done for either of these past recalls are also included under this current one.
“This disruption in no way changes our commitment to the ID.4 and our growing BEV portfolio,” Gillies added. “The ID.4 remains one of America’s best-selling electric vehicles.”
