Stellantis has filed a patent on technology for combatting thermal runaway fires in electric vehicles, according to Green Car Reports.

Filed in 2023, the United States Patent and Trademark Office recently published a patent from Stellantis for an electric vehicle exhaust system. According to the automaker, it could potentially stop, or at least reduce the severity of, a battery fire.

With batteries releasing flammable gases during thermal runaway, Stellantis has proposed eliminating them with the use of a battery exhaust system. Gases would pass through treatment zones that will eliminate or reduce the presence of various chemical species from the gas flow.

In addition to preventing fires, the patent asserts that removing flammable gases would help vent pressure from the battery pack.
