Nissan, Stellantis Automotive Supplier Marelli Files for Bankruptcy, Citing Tariffs
Marelli Holdings Co., the auto supplier for Nissan, Stellantis, and other automakers, has filed for bankruptcy, reports Transport Topics.
Senior leadership in the company has signed a deal to restructure under new leadership and eliminate Marelli’s debt burden. Based in Saitama, Japan, Marelli operates around 170 facilities globally, supplying components such as lighting systems, air conditioning, electric motors, and suspensions to automakers.
Causes behind the move includes supply chain issues originating from the COVID-19 pandemic, said Marelli. The company also cited tariffs as a leading factor in its bankruptcy.
“Marelli was severely affected by tariffs due to its import/export-focused business and the imposition of tariffs specifically against automotive manufacturers and suppliers,” stated CEO David Slump.
The move comes after unsuccessful restructuring attempts over the past few years in the face of declining orders.
According to one individual familiar with the matter, ownership of Marelli will effectively be handed off to global investment firm Strategic Value Partners. The company does not expect any impact to its operations as a result of the process.
