General Motors has issued a recall for previous-gen Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks due to an airbag defect, according to AutoEvolution.
Covered in the recall are 2018–2019 Silverado and Sierra trucks from the 1500, 2500, and 3500 lines, which may include roof-rail airbag inflator end caps that may detach when deployed.
The roof-rail airbag modules were supplied by Joyson Safety Systems, a company founded in April 2018 shortly after Key Safety Systems acquired Takata Corporation's remaining assets.
GM and Joyson Safety Systems are investigating what the root cause of the issue is. GM has not ruled out inflator sidewall ruptures being a potential danger, either, but did not mention propellant-related concerns anywhere in recall documentation.
Owner notices will be mailed beginning August 11, 2025. Dealers are instructed to replace all affected roof-rail airbag modules with new units, containing inflators produced from a different lot.
