Ford has issued a recall for 200,000 over a backup camera defect, according to a report from Automotive Dive.

Included in the recall is the Ford Transit Connect, F-150, Explorer, Bronco Sport, Maverick Ranger, Mustang, Expedition, EcoSport, Escape Fusion Edge, F-250 Super Duty, and Corsair, as well as the Lincoln Continental, Navigator, Nautilus, and Aviator. All of the models fall within the model year range of 2018 to 2024.

The issue stems from the SYNC 3 software for the infotainment system, which, according to the recall report, has an error causing “system instability concerns and/or a failure to preserve certain settings across ignition cycles.” This can lead to problems with the software log file compression routines, and all of the free memory space of the SYNC Accessory Protocol Interface
Module being used up.

When that happens, the system can’t write new files to the APIM, causing backup camera issues as well as  incorrect language settings and/or potential inability to receive software updates.

On Jan. 17, NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations informed Ford of several vehicle owner questionnaires related to rear-view camera image display problems on 2021 to 2023 Bronco Sport models. The issue was taken to Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group, where warranty data was reviewed for all rearview camera system components of the vehicles.

The investigation found that the problem was successfully resolved in most impacted vehicles with a previous SYNC 3 software update. Ford investigators have concluded that the issue likely lies with the prior software release.

Dealers have been instructed to install a SYNC 3 software flash update on all recalled vehicles.
