Honda Recalls Over 400K Civics for Issue Causing Wheels to Detach
Honda has recalled over 400,000 vehicles for an issue that can lead to wheels detaching, reports The Street.
A total of 406,290 vehicles are impacted by the recall, comprising Honda Civic passenger vehicles from model years 2016 to 2021.
The reason behind the recall is cited as missing or improperly installed steel lug seat inserts, which can cause wheel nuts to loosen. The recall notice stated that a factory worker at the wheel supplier’s facility in Italy moved a safety fence separating finished wheels from unfinished ones, which led to incomplete wheels lacking the press-fitted lug seat inserts being used. The wheel supplier factory has since closed down.
Honda became aware of the issue after a routine safety inspection in July 2024. After a global investigation, the company determined the issue went beyond Japan and impacted U.S. vehicles as well.
Notices will be mailed to owners and dealers will be replacing wheels as needed. The company has advised drivers to stop driving if they experience unusual vibrations, noise, or handling issues with their vehicle.
