Hyundai Owner Faces Data Access Restrictions Over Brake Replacement Job
Right to Repair has been an ongoing topic within the automotive industry—but it may be impossible to perform even a brake replacement on electric vehicles without being impacted by data access issues.
According to CarScoops, a discussion on the topic was sparked by a user on Reddit’s r/Ioniq5N community who sought to replace his rear brake pads. He soon found out that in order to do so, he would need Hyundai’s J2534 Diagnostic Tool, a Windows-based application available exclusively through Hyundai’s tech info portal. Additionally, the software requires a $60 weekly subscription, an approved hardware adapter costing over $2,000, and a constant internet connection for authentication, according to the post.
Unfortunately for DIY users, they’re barred from using the application—the Reddit user was prompted to enter a business name and 9-digit Federal Employer Identification Number.
The situation underscores the changing landscape of Right to Repair, showing that everything from in-depth repairs to quick brake jobs are impacted as vehicles become more digital.
