General Motors Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over L87 Engines

The lawsuit claims GM knew of engine defects since 2021 and that their recall efforts were inadequate, with replacement oils worsening internal engine issues.

A new class action alleges that several vehicles from General Motors contain defective L87 engines, according to Car Complaints.

Illinois plaintiff Ronald S. Hermanowicz filed the lawsuit, claiming the rod bearings in his new 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 spun, causing damage to the rods and crankshaft and filling the engine with metal.

The lawsuit argues that the V8 engines contain defects that damage the connecting rod bearings, as well as incorrect crankshaft dimensions. GM has allegedly known the engines were defective since at least 2021.

GM has previously issued a recall for the V8 L87 engine, but the lawsuit argues it was insufficient. If no problems were found with the crankshafts or camshafts, vehicles had their factory oil replaced; the suit claims the replacement oil only led to increased drag on internal engine components.
