Stellantis Recalls Over 61,000 Jeep Cherokees for Power Transfer Unit Issues

Stellantis has issued a recall for 61,711 Jeep Cherokee models from 2019-2023 due to faulty two-speed power transfer units that can cause loss of power or vehicle rollaway, with a fix still in development.

Stellantis has issued a recall for 61,711 Jeep Cherokee vehicles due to an issue with the power transfer units, according to Autoblog.

The recall, centered on 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokees, has to do with two-speed power transfer units prone to failure. This can lead to a loss of power while driving, and if the vehicle is in park, it could roll away.

Signs of failure can include a message telling drivers to service the vehicle’s 4WD system, as well as noises, vibrations, or changes in drive quality.

This isn’t a new issue for Jeep Cherokees, with a similar problem having prompted a June 2020 for certain 2014-2017 Cherokees. A second recall then came in 2023 to expand the number of affected vehicles, followed by a third recall in January 2025 for another problem related to the PTU.

The automaker is aware of one accident and one injury potentially related to the problem, as well as nine customer assistance records, 387 warranty claims, five field reports, and 16 other service records potentially relating to the problem.

Dealers will be notified of the problem starting May 14. However, a fix for the issue is still under development, with no clear timeline. Vehicle owners are set to receive an update on or around June 25-26.
