Former FBI Director to Settle VW Fraud Suits

Jan. 12, 2016

Jan. 12, 2016—Robert S. Mueller III, former FBI director and current WilmerHale partner, will serve as settlement master for consolidated cases in California that seek damages from Volkswagen over its alleged use of illegal software to cheat emissions standards, according to a report by Law360.

“There is an urgent need to determine if all or some of the pending matters can be resolved by the parties sooner rather than later,” Judge Breyer said, according to the report. “[Mueller’s] government and private practice experience makes him uniquely qualified to work with and earn the trust of the parties.”

As settlement master, Mueller won’t make any decisions but will facilitate settlement discussion, according to Law360.

Mueller was named director of the FBI one week before the 9/11 terrorist attacks and held the position through 2013.
