Jan. 10, 2013—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently granted California’s appeal to waive the Clean Air Act, in order for the state to implement several new clean-vehicle rules, according to an Automotive Service Association (ASA) report.
The latest rules include stricter greenhouse gas limits for vehicles, rigid zero-emission vehicle requirements and a particulate matter standard for 2025 vehicles.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) claims that almost 40 percent of new car sales in the country will be subject to the new rules.
Automaker associations had urged the EPA to deny the state’s waiver request or at least defer the enactment of the program, according to the report.
