April 18, 2019—Iowa might lean towards allowing autonomous vehicles on highways. According to the Sioux City Journal, the Iowa House joined the Senate in approving legislation which would allow autonomous vehicles to be operated on Iowa roads if certain conditions are met.
The Sioux City Journal reports that while it may take years, Senate File 302 would create regulations for autonomous vehicles. Some of the regulations would include rules on operation, insurance, and liability for a driver or owner in the result of crash.
Senate File 302 would require minimal risk if the driving system malfunctions, theSioux City Journal reports. Autonomous vehicles would have to comply with Iowa's traffic laws and regulations, as well as be certified by the manufacturer to be in compliance with safety standards.
Additionally, the legislation authorizes the use of software to dispatch autonomous vehicles to transport people or goods.
