Jan. 24, 2021—Ford is recalling around 200,000 cars in the U.S. due to a problem that can force brake lights to stay on.
Per a report from the Associated Press via The Detroit News, high temperatures and humidity can cause a rubber brake pedal part to disintegrate in some 2014-15 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans as well as some 2015 Ford Mustangs. If that part disintegrates, a vehicle's brake lights will remain on.
The defect can cause confusion and increase risk of a crash, and drivers with automatic transmissions are able to shift out of park without having the brakes engaged.
All vehicles were either sold or registered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
Dealers will replace the brake and clutch pedal bumpers on affected cars at no cost to the driver. Owners will begin receiving notification March 3.
