NHTSA Wants to Meet with Automakers about Missing Takata Recall Deadline

    May 15, 2018
The U.S. auto safety agency wants to meet with 12 major automakers that failed to fulfill a December 2017 target deadline for completing repairs on Takata air bag inflators.

May 15, 2018—The U.S. auto safety agency wants to meet with 12 major automakers that failed to fulfill a December 2017 target deadline for completing repairs on Takata air bag inflators, reported Reuters.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Monday it has written letters on May 3 to automakers including Honda, Toyota, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Daimler and Ford, according to the report.

Collectively, the automakers had repaired 65 percent of 20 million vehicles in the highest priority groups, leaving about 7 million unrepaired.

Nearly 30 million U.S. vehicles remain unrepaired in the air bag recall affecting 19 automakers, according to the report. At least 22 deaths and more than 290 injuries worldwide are linked to Takata inflators that explode and can unleash metal shrapnel inside cars and trucks.
