Feb. 16, 2015—2014 saw the most recalls ever issued by the auto industry, according to figures released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
There were more than 803 recalls issued during 2014, surpassing the 683 announced in 2008. Almost 64 million vehicles were recalled, eclipsing the former record of 30.8 million vehicles.
General Motors led the way, with over 27 million vehicles getting recalled in 84 recall statements.
The institution responsible for the second-most recalls in 2014 isn’t even an automaker. Roughly 21.7 million vehicles—about 34 percent of recalls this year—were a result of faulty airbag systems implemented by Japanese manufacturer Takata. Takata provides the airbags for Honda, among other companies, and six fatalities and 64 injuries have been attributed to the airbag problem so far.
While GM saw the most recalls, Italian luxury automaker Maserati issued the least, with 139 Maserati vehicles receiving recalls in 2014 for crimped fuel hoses.
