Domestic Automakers Top Quality Survey

May 14, 2013

May 14, 2013—For the first time in more than a decade, cars and trucks made by domestic automakers finished first in a majority of categories in San Diego-based Strategic Vision’s 2013 Total Quality Index.

The Detroit Three—General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC—won or tied competitors in 12 out of 21 categories.

“There’s no questioning domestic car makers want to lead,” said Alexander Edwards, president of Strategic Vision. “For the first time in over a decade our comprehensive and holistic study of quality resulted in more domestic winners than imports."

In addition, the Dodge Dart, Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt received the best scores in their respective segments.

The Dodge Dart received a high score of 884 in the compact segment, while the Fusion and Chevrolet both received a score of 908 in the mid-size car segment.

Ford’s F-250 and F-350 topped the list for heavy-duty pickup, while GM’s Buick Enclave, GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Traverse, Avalanche and Corvette coupe also topped their categories. Chrysler’s Town & Country minivan, 200 convertible sedan and Durango SUV also came out on top.

When it comes to brand rankings, Volkswagen’s Audi and Toyota’s Lexus tied for best individual brand.

Strategic Vision’s study measured how individual models, brands and corporations performed by using a scale that measures 155 aspects of customer purchasing decisions and their satisfaction with the vehicle upon purchasing.
