Waymo Facility Coming to Michigan

Jan. 23, 2019—Waymo, the self-driving car company, is coming to Michigan, according to a report by The Verge. According to the publication, the announcement includes plans to build a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing center and hire 400 employees over the next five years.

The $8 million investment was approved by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, according to The Verge. The Detroit News reports that the deal includes the creation of a minimum of 100 new jobs in the state, as well as the $8 million incentive "only if it exceeds the minimum and creates up to 400 jobs." In total, the facility will reach $13.6 million.

"This will be the world’s first factory 100%-dedicated to the mass production of [Level 4] autonomous vehicles,” the company said in a blog post, The Verge reports. 

The move will bring openings for engineers, operations experts, and fleet coordinators, according to The Verge. In addition, the company is working with Magna, a Canadian auto supplier, and Lyft, according to The Verge
