Edmunds Forecasts Auto Sales to End Year Positively

Edmunds projects that nearly 1.59 million vehicles will be sold in December in the U.S., representing a 14 percent increase in sales from a month earlier.

Dec. 27, 2017—Edmunds recently forecasted that nearly 1.59 million vehicles will be sold in December in the U.S., for an estimated, seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17.7 million. That indicates a 14 percent increase in sales from the month of November.

However, those sales figures also represent a 5.8 percent decrease when compared to December 2016.

Among eight of the industry’s top OEMs, GM appears on track for an especially strong December, as it projects to sell 301,617 vehicles, marking a 22.9 percent uptick from a month earlier (though a 5.5 percent decrease year over year).

Toyota also projects to have a relatively strong December, as Edmunds forecasts that OEM to sell 227,481 vehicles, representing an 18.7 percent increase from a month earlier (though a 6.5 percent decrease from December 2016).

Based on the forecast for December auto sales, Edmunds expects to hit its full-year sales forecast of 17.2 million new vehicles; fleet transactions in December figure to account for 16.8 percent of total sales. Additionally, an estimated 2.8 million used vehicles are expected to be sold this month.
