May 10, 2022—BMW has decided to temporarily ship some of their vehicles without support for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay in an effort to avoid major delays.
According to Yahoo! Finance, a report from Automotive News Europe says that the manufacturer is citing the ongoing chip shortage as the determining factor in this decision.
BMW has changed suppliers and is currently using a chip that does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but affected vehicles should be able to receive an update to utilize these functions by the end of June 2022.
This would be achieved through an over-the-air update on the vehicles.
The chip shortage is proving to have a lasting impact on automakers and the automotive industry as a whole, and BMW is no stranger to this phenomena.
Last year, they omitted touchscreen features from some of their vehicles due to the chip shortage.
