A career training facility in Buffalo, New York is attempting to secure funding for an automotive tech training program, Buffalo News reports.

The Northland Workforce Training Center has partnered with SUNY Erie Community College (ECC) to create a training program for those entering the auto industry. 

The program would join Northland’s other workforce training programs, which primarily focus on training manufacturing workers. The Center hopes to further expand its lineup of programs offered.

With the New York Department of Labor estimating a ​​35% increase in the demand for automotive service and technician jobs in Western New York by 2030, those working in the auto industry will only become more needed in the region.

Before the program can happen, Northland and ECC must lock in funding for it. 

$1.2 million in funding for the program has been suggested by the Western New York Power Proceeds Allocation Board, but it will ultimately be up to the New York Power Authority's board of trustees, who could decide as soon as September.

If the funding is approved, the auto tech program could launch by fall 2024, after the necessary equipment is installed.

“Everything we do is driven by industry demand,” said Northland President and CEO Stephen Tucker. “That's a part of our strategic plan, our framework.”
