The ASE Education Foundation is now accepting applications for this year’s Byrl Shoemaker Instructor of the Year, according to a press release.
The title was created in honor of Dr. Shoemaker, the state director of vocational and adult education at the Ohio Department of Education from 1962 to 1982, and is awarded to a high school or college instructor in an ASE-accredited automotive, diesel/truck, or collision repair program.
Dr. Shoemaker is credited with helping develop the system of career technical education programs in Ohio as well as two-year, post-high school technician education centers. He also aided in developing VICA, now known as SkillsUSA, in the state of Ohio and NATEF accreditation–what is now known as ASE Education Foundation accreditation.
The winner of this annual award will receive a plaque, $1,000, and a paid trip for two to the ASE Instructor Training Conference taking place July 15-18 in Minneapolis as well as ASE's fall board of directors meeting that will take place at the annual technician of the year recognition banquet on Nov. 20 in New Orleans.
To be eligible, instructors must be nominated by an administrator (principal, program director, dean, department chair, or CTE director), who will have until April 30 to complete the form online. After finalists are chosen, they will be contacted by an ASE Education Foundation field manager.
