Volkswagen is issuing a recall for over 200,000 vehicles due to a defect with the steering rack in certain models, reports USA Today.

Included in the recall are:

• 82,601 of the 2018-2019 Volkswagen Atlas
• 85,713 of the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan
• 40,410 of the 2019-2021 Audi Q3

In these vehicles, a mounting bolt on the steering rack is prone to corrosion, upon moisture entering the area surrounding the bolt. The bolt head fracturing could then lead to the steering rack being attached by just one mounting point, and continued loading could then cause the steering rack housing to fracture and potentially a loss of steering capability.

Vehicles with a specific steering rack are impacted by the issue. To resolve the problem, dealers will replace the right steering rack mounting bolt with a bolt containing highly corrosion-resistant polymer coating. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Nov. 10.
