The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is opening an investigation into 1.1 million older Ram 1500 pickup trucks due to reports of power steering loss, Reuters reports.

The NHTSA has currently received 380 reports of sporadic or total loss of power steering assistance, with three crashes having occurred as a result. 

The issue has been seen in 2013 through 2016 model year Ram 1500 pickup trucks, but the NHTSA is opening a recall query to see if more undiscovered defects may be present.

When Stellantis originally issued a recall in 2016 for 440 vehicles due to contamination of the electrical power steering unit, the NHTSA suggested that other vehicles may also be affected beyond what the recall covered.

The complaints filed detail expensive threats to the vehicle’s safety happening as a result, with repairs taking a long time before the needed parts will arrive.

This past January, one Florida driver experienced the steering wheel of their 2013 Ram 1500 locking up and not turning either way. They were quoted a price of over $2,000 for parts to repair the problem.
