An auto shop owner in Memphis, Tennessee is suing the City of Memphis, its police chief, and several officers for $3 million over claims that the business was illegally searched, WREG News Channel 3 reports.

Sal’s Tire and Auto Repair was searched on September 22, 2022, by officers working with the Organized Crime Unit, who claimed they found stolen cars and auto parts and considered it evidence of a “chop shop” operation.

According to attorney Forrest Craig, who is representing Sal’s Tire and Auto Repair, between 10-20 officers were on the scene, searching through everything they could.

Shop owner Salvador Guevara-Reyes was arrested and taken to jail and shop staff were allegedly detained for an hour. The suit also claims that thousands of dollars in property and equipment were taken by the police.

When a search warrant was finally presented several hours later to the shop owner’s daughter, only one address was listed, even though several buildings the business uses under other addresses were also searched, the suit claims.

Though Guevara-Reyes was charged with theft of property and violation of the chop shop law, these charges were dropped in February. This past Wednesday, the business filed a lawsuit due to entering without probable cause or a search warrant. The suit also argued that the owners were targeted for being Hispanic.

The officer transporting Guevara-Reyes at the time of his arrest, Tadarius Bean, has faced issues before, being one of the five former MPD officers charged with second-degree murder and federal civil rights violations in the death of Tyre Nichols.
