Dangerous Airbag Inflator Defect Prompts GM Recall of Select Silverado and Sierra Models
General Motors’ most recent recall involves a dangerous defect involving airbag inflators, reports Motor1.
The recall includes Silverado 1500 and HD, and the Sierra 1500 and HD, all from model years 2016 and 2017. Roof-rail airbag inflators in these vehicles may be prone to rupturing due to a small crack in the inflator canister being combined with water left inside after the washing process.
When combined, these issues can cause stress-corrosion cracking of the canister wall, causing the inflator to rupture and release compressed gas and turn the end cap and other components into projectiles.
To resolve the issue, dealers will replace both the left and right side roof-rail airbag modules. Vehicle owners will be notified beginning Nov. 9.
