Hyundai Recalls 94,622 Vehicles Over Fire Risk from Power Seat Motors

A safety recall has been issued for select Hyundai Genesis models from 2015-2020, linked to a power seat control switch that may overheat and ignite.

Hyundai has issued a recall for 94,622 vehicles ‌in the U.S. due to an issue with the Front power seat motors that could cause a fire, reports Reuters.

Included in the recall are certain 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis and 2017-2020 Genesis G80 models. The problem lies with a power seat control switch becoming stuck, causing the front power seat motors to overheat and potentially catch on fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven. The front power-seat control switches in question were provided by Nidec Mobility Korea Corporation, which has recently found itself at the center of an accounting controversy.

The automaker has said that a fix for the problem is still under development. In the meantime, vehicle owners are being told to park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures. It’s estimated that 1% of recalled vehicles have the problem.

Hyundai is aware of two alleged incidents in the U.S. related to the defect, but no related crashes or injuries.
