Toyota to Fix Sienna Hybrid Seat-Back Issue With Software Update

Toyota is recalling 228,367 seven-passenger Sienna Hybrids from model years 2022–2026 because second-row seat backs may unlock in certain crashes.

Toyota has issued a recall for certain Sienna Hybrid vehicles due to an issue that can cause the second-row seat backs to unlock in the event of a crash, reports Motor1.

Included in the recall are 228,367 of the 2022-2026 Sienna Hybrid seven-passenger models. Other Sienna configurations are not included in the recall.

If a seat back fails to remain upright during a crash, it can raise the likelihood of injury. The issue was discovered by Toyota during crash-validation testing, which showed that it was caused by certain frontal collisions.

Vehicle owners will be made aware beginning Dec. 7. To remedy the problem, dealers will apply a software update to vehicles’ supplemental restraint system's electronic control unit. For the roughly 200 vehicles with the Mobility as a Service package, dealers instead will replace both second-row seat backs with parts using a new recliner mechanism.
