July 14, 2021—General Motors issued a recall on Friday of more than 400,000 pickup trucks in the U.S. due to a possibility of the side airbags exploding spontaneously.

According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, the recall covers certain models of Chevrolet and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 trucks. Three instances of airbag inflators rupturing and sending debris into the main cabin have been reported: one in Florida and two in Texas. All three vehicles were unoccupied at the time, and GM says no injuries have been reported.

GM says the issue was caused by a manufacturing defect that allowed moisture into the inflator while it was being produced. That, in turn, caused corrosion and led to the possible ruptures. The company says it has limited replacement parts and will notify owners when those parts become "widely available."
