Study: 1 in 5 Cars Has Open Recall

May 3, 2021
Data from Carfax also found that California is the state with the most estimated open recalls with 6.3 million vehicles.

May 3, 2021—One in five vehicles on the road today has an open recall, according to data from Carfax.

That's down 5 percent from the previous year, but Carfax said in a press release that there are 53 million vehicles with open recalls driving around the roads. Pickups and minivans are the most likely.

"The number of vehicles on the road with open recalls peaked at 63 million in 2017, so we're heading in the right direction but there's still a long way to go," said Faisal Hasan, general manager of data at CARFAX, in the release.

The state with the most estimated open recalls is California, with 6.3 million.
