July 6, 2022—Automotive Technology students at Texas State Technical College recently learned how to take apart a manual transmission.
According to My RGV News, students are developing skill sets such as this amidst an industry that is seeing rapid changes and innovations regarding vehicle technology. The hope in teaching these students how to take apart a manual transmission is that they will have specialized skills to bring in to the aftermarket workforce.
“How to take apart a manual transmission has become a lost art,” said instructor William Parker in the article. “This is going to help our students when it comes time to interview with employers.”
The students also believe that this type of training could give them a leg up when applying for jobs.
“I wanted to learn how to work on a manual transmission because it will look good on my resume,” said student Matthew River . “A lot of shops have people working on automatic transmissions and not the manual. If one comes into the shop, I will be ready to work on it.”
When teaching his students this skill, Parker prioritized helping them remain calm and level-headed through hands-on experience with the manual transmission.
The demand for skilled automotive technicians is palpable throughout the state of Texas and the rest of the country. By offering future technicians opportunities to learn specialized yet applicable skill sets, they have a greater chance of finding the right fit for a successful automotive career.
