Feb. 3, 2023 – A study from the Great Plains Institute showed that in order to meet federal goals for a national EV charging network, it will require “1,104 fast-charging stations along major corridors,” according to Green Car Reports.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has required $7.5 billion to be put toward building 500,000 charging stations for EVs across the country. $5 billion of that will be given to individual states, and to qualify, states must “set guidelines that call for four 150-kw connectors, every 50 miles.”
Only 509 public, non-Tesla fast chargers comply with those guidelines out of the 4,943 that exist in the country currently.
In order to add chargers that comply with the guidelines, given by the Federal Highway Administration under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program, it would cost an “estimated $794 million to $1.3 billion in installation costs.”
Issues pointed out by the study related to four 150-kw connectors every 50 miles possibly not being enough for “higher-traffic routes.” Additional stations “to connect adjacent routes” is suggested.
